The “mommy shaming” needs to stop!

As many mothers out there today, I was a prime target on a pretty popular Facebook page for mommy shaming…why? Because I use disposable diapers of all things. Oh the audacity!!!!

I literally got dozen of comments in the first 30 seconds I posted my comment about a particular brand of diapers I use. All of them shamming me for not using cloth. Yep, that’s right, people who don’t know me, don’t know what I have or haven’t tried and people who aren’t my parents or who pay my bills!

Many of you know, I have tried cloth…we didn’t like it. Not only that, Milah has extremely sensitive skin and no matter what insert or diaper we tried, she broke out in rashes. Enough explaining myself though.

What right as mothers do we have to judge other mothers? Whether it’s a differnce in diapers or birth plans. It needs to stop!

No one has the right to judge you and lecture you about your choice as a parent. I have seen too much of it. Women judging other women because of a natural birth vs a cesarean or breastfeeding vs formula feeding. Who cares?!? Seriously, you have no right to judge others and that person you are shamming has no respect for you now. They don’t deserve the criticism. You are basically telling them because they went a different parenting path, that they are terrible parents.

No one should be judged based on how they birthed their child, how they are feeding or diapering their child. It is sickening to think people are judging women based on this.

The worst appointment ever!

So, with still nursing my (giant) little guy and trying to pump to help supplement my nephew, I decided I needed to make an appointment with a lactation consultant. I have been pumping for a month and really haven’t seen a huge difference in my output. I have been trying to do a few things with helping my supply. I have always been super paranoid about it since I didn’t do well with Milah.

Dax has been doing so well, I really haven’t been too nervous about how much he is getting.

I really envy those women that can nurse their baby and still pump 8, 10, 20 extra ounces a day. I can’t even pump 4 ounces most days.

I think my pump is acting up or maybe I’m using the wrong one or wrong size pump shield. I really try to eat right and take care of myself and I still only get an extra 4 ounces…on a good day…depressing.

Anyways, the consultant I saw was nice but she did a complete 180 once she found out that I was pumping for my nephew. I literally got lectured for the next 20 mins about how they don’t support that and that my sister in law needs to call milk banks. And she wouldn’t look at my pump or check me for sizing. She literally was so worried about Dax. My 22lb 8 month old…I think he okay! Worst appointment ever!

Luckily I found an amazing Facebook group that is only local women (and men?). I posted my problem and they directed me to a group of ladies. I haven’t checked them out yet but plan on it next week.

Now, I do understand that milk sharing is a litter dangerous if you don’t know where or who it’s coming from. Donor milk that comes to hospitals is from women are carefully selected and that milk is pasteurized.

Now, I am Emery’s Aunt and every pregnant women has blood drawn at the begininng of their pregnancy for disease testing. I would have known if there was something going on. Obviously I don’t.

I must say that Emery has gained at least 2 lbs since he has been supplemented with my milk. The problem is, I would love it if I could get more for him, but I am struggling. So hopefully this new place can help me out!

I will keep everyone updated!

Baby probiotics and donor milk

We have had an issue with Dax’s pooping schedule…I know, TMI. But seriously, this kid poops less than once a week. And now he is starting solids, so it’s less in quantity. He hasn’t been constipated by any means, but he isn’t comfortable.

I never thought of giving my kids Probiotics. Never crossed my mind.

I had to stop at Whole Foods today to pick up a few nursing supplements because I am pumping and sending my extra milk to my nephew. While I was there, I happened to walk by the probiotics. I asked the lady there a few questions and she had tons of answers for me! Thank god. She helped my pick out a good one for kids and babies older than 3 months. I gave him 1/4 tsp at lunch time and he has already pooped twice today!!! That NEVER happens!!! Hopefully this works for him!

Back to the donor milk…our preemie nephew is 6 days younger than Dax. They were supposed to be 8 or 9 weeks apart and aren’t. He isn’t dealing with formula well. He has had tons of issues with it. My sister in law lost her supply when she started working again. She texted me the other day and asked if I had a milk stock and I don’t. But I have pumping and pumping to build up my supply so I can send her milk.

Now, the last couple of days have been slow going. A few times I have even dry pumped just to try and trick my body into thinking it needs to “over supply” it with milk. I am hoping the trick works. Sometimes I get lucky during a dry pump and get a couple of ounces. Today has been the worst. I don’t know if it’s because Dax has been cluster feeding or if I just haven’t been able to sit down and hit it hard. I did get a few ounces this morning, but that’s about it.

I picked up so Mother Love-More Milk Plus supplement and some Fenugreek. I had really good luck with the fenugreek with Milah, so I am hoping this time is good too! I have never used the More Milk Plus, but it has great reviews! I already use and LOVE the herbal teas for lactation, so I grabbed another box of that! Wish me luck!

We are visiting them this weekend and I am hoping to get some one on one time with him and maybe he will motivate the girls to get grinding!!! I will be doing some serious skin to skin with Dax though to help!!!

Teething, solids, potty training and preschool hunting…

I must say that this past week has been a crazy one.

Dax still isn’t that interested in solids yet. He does like some foods more than others and prefers (organic) pre made baby food more than homemade baby food. He does like fresh (not frozen) avocados…weird. But whatever. I have made every fruit and vegetable under the sun that he can have at his age and he hates them all. But he will eat the canned baby food. Still weird.

He is also teething. He is not doing as well as what Milah did at that age. She gracefully got her first 2 bottom teeth without any issues. We didn’t even know she was teething. Dax on the other hand, has been chewing on EVERYTHING…including me…ouch. He popped the first bottom tooth about a week ago and every time he nursed, he would bite. After the tooth came in, he stopped biting. Then right around Tuesday, he started biting again and the 2nd tooth broke through this morning. Now hopefully he stops biting me. Nothing scarier than putting your nipples into a mouth with new (sharp) teeth…NOTHING!

Now, Milah has successfully used the potty once so far this week. She still has no interest in potty training. I happened to catch her right before a dirty diaper. She was so confused though. We have bribed her with everything and anything we can think of. I was getting concerned with her eligibility for preschool if she wasn’t potty trained. A few schools I talked to are pretty strict with that rule and want them to be potty trained before admission. Luckily, the one we are in love with, doesn’t care. I really think once she gets around other kids that are potty trained, she will want to be trained too…I make it sound like I’m trying to house train a dog, which was easier by the way. Maybe I need to try that with her.

She is still in a crib and she NEVER wakes up dry, so I don’t know how well it will work.

We have picked out a preschool and are touring it next Friday. I still can’t believe she is already at the age for preschool. The preschool that we are interested in runs a normal school year and then they offer “summer camps”. They run 4 days long and have so many different activities! We are going to sign her up for a few different summer camps and then she will start school in August….I still can not believe it! I am hoping she enjoys it and doesn’t mind being away from me for a few hours a day.

Dax is 7 months old!! Wait, what?!?!

Seriously, he is on the down side of his first year! I am so sad! He is growing way too fast!

At his 6 month appointment, he was 20.6 lbs (86%), 26 3/4 inches (52%)…big and short!

So, from the last month, he has hit so many milestones too! He is starting to enjoy solids a little more. He has also perfecting sitting up! He does try to feed himself with a spoon. He is also sleeping in his crib more. Sometimes…all night!!!! His newest trick is army crawling. He gets around really well! He hasn’t figured out how to do it on his hands and knees yet but he gets around!!!

He has also outgrown his infant seat. It did have a 30 lb weight limit on it but his head was starting to peak over the cushion, which was at it’s highest setting. Since then, we have purchased 2 new seats! Both Britax!

Dax got a Britax Marathon convertible and Milah now has a Britax Pioneer 70! Milah’s has not made it to the car yet though. We just got 10-12 inches of snow in a few days, so David has been driving the Outlander all week! So far, Dax hates ALL car seats. He doesn’t want to be in any of them. He does get comfy faster in this one though. He fusses when he is first placed in there and then settles quickly.

I have also finally finished his room this week!!! We moved my desk into his room and moved the hide a bed out! That thing is annoying! So now the Jayhawk room is done…even though I broke his cork board…oops! I do need to get that thing back up! There are still a few things I want to find for it but I am officially done rearranging pictures and his name and his bed!!!

We did have a little scare with Bennett last weekend during all of our bad weather. He kept having accidents in the house and he NEVER does that. I knew something was wrong. He had a low grade bladder infection and was put on an antibiotic for it. Poor guy. He thought he was in so much trouble. He was the first time but after he did it again a couple hours later, I knew something was wrong. He is much better now!

At this point, thankfully, we are all happy and healthy!!!

Why I don’t share baby clothes…

Last weekend I went through all of our baby clothes and sorted everything. Not to get rid of it, just to organize and see what I had that was “gender neutral”. I only found a few things, mostly white socks. But something crossed my mind and the tears that followed made me realize something. I will never give up any of my baby clothes.

I had this argument with my Mother in Law early spring last year and she lost…which doesn’t happen often. Before we found out that my sister in law was having a boy also, my MIL asked me to give up all of Milah’s baby clothes…ummm, NO! I told her if there was something my SIL wanted to borrow, that would be okay, but I was not giving her all of my clothes. She was PISSED! Now, let me explain myself before everyone gets their panties in a tangle.

Most of Milah’s baby clothes came from her baby shower. That means, the majority of those came from my family…because there is a TON of them! I had more clothes than what poor baby Milah could wear. Luckily, babies are kind of messy, so she did wear a lot of them. Some also came from my work baby shower, which was amazing. Those girls were kind enough to throw me a shower right before Milah came. We also bought 99% of her clothes. At the time, we lived 24 hours (1300 miles) away from family. So if we needed something, I went and bought it. Now, my mother in law is a pro-shopper, so she did send outfits out but most of what we got from them were hand me downs from our niece.

We are grateful for those hand me downs, and our niece grows so fast, so normally wears something twice and that’s it. But David likes Milah to have new stuff most of the time. I also buy a lot of their “outdoor” or “playtime” clothes at a consignment shop. Just makes a lot of sense to do that. And these days, Milah likes to spend her time in just a diaper…I have no idea why and it drives me insane! I really like the shop that I found. They never sell dirty clothes or tattered clothing, everything is in almost perfect condition! I bought a ton of Dax’s newborn clothes there and even some preemie stuff for Emery there too. That place is sometimes a little overwhelming!

We haven’t decided if there will be another Paquin baby yet or not. We are taking it day to day. We will make that decision in a few years. Now, I know someday someone will call me a hoarder but I would really love to hand these clothes to Milah or Dax when they have a boy or girl and be able to tell them that they wore these clothes and how special they are!! I’m all about sentimental stuff these days!

Dax is 6 months old!!!

Oh my gosh! Where did the last 6 months go?!? Holy cows.
Seriously though, someone please freeze time so I can enjoy my babies being babies! Dax is 6 months old and is wearing size 12 month clothes…my secret? Breastmilk! Seriously, he didn’t have any food until his 6 month mark. Since then he has had a few bites of squash and peas but that’s about it. He loves breastmilk and nursing way too much!
He is now getting up on his hands and knees…and rolls everywhere. Nothing is safe!
Yes, he is still bed sharing, which he has now beat Milah is length. Milah only slept with is for 4 months (all night) 6 months (just mornings). We did get an extra baby monitor and will be working on crib sleeping soon. I’m the one having a hard time with it…not David.
Speaking of Milah, she is almost 3!!! More lost time! We planned a birthday party today and she has no idea what that is! Lol. She is such a crazy, smart and sweet little girl…once that top right molar broke through. Wow! That was a fun couple of weeks. She was horrific. But we got through it!
I have an appt later this week for Dax for his 6 months. I will post stats then!!!
